About Haines, Alaska
Haines is a small Alaskan community located on the shores of the majestic Lynn Canal, the deepest inland fjord in North America. It is fifteen nautical miles from the famous gold rush town of Skagway, and is home to various clans of the native Tlingit, the original coastal dwellers of this area. Historic Fort William H. Seward is the site of the U.S. Army’s military occupation at the turn of the century.
Haines is just a short hop by plane to the world-renowned Glacier Bay National Park, or for those wishing access into the wilds of Canada, the U.S.-Canadian border is only forty miles up the Haines Highway.
Annual events include the Southeast Alaska State Fair held in August and the Alaska Bald Eagle Festival in November. Held in early summer, the Haines Salmon Derby invites heavy competition as the area’s best anglers vie for thousands of dollars in prizes. The July 4th celebration offers an opportunity for the visitor to sample traditional Alaskan down-home fun.
